Sexual Abuse

Existing charities for sexual abuse for help after and protection before hand are:
http://lucyfaithfull.org
http://www.sarsas.org.uk
http://www.rapecrisis.org.uk/rapeampsexualviolence2.php
To find these charities, I conducted a word search 'sexual abuse charities' and there were a lot of results, I chose some of the top ones as these would appear to be the more popular. On these websites it states what the charity does and who it helps and how to contact etc.

Legal constraints and statistics

The most suited way to grab my audience's attention is to show them statistics, I feel this is one of the most affect ways to grab an audiences attention when talking about situations similar to the one I am. The key statistics on child sexual abuse from research and official publications. In April 2014, 1 in 20 children had been sexually abused. Over 90% of children who have experienced sexual abuse, were abused by someone they knew. 18,915 sexual crimes against children under 16 were recorded in England and Wales in 2012/13. More than one in three children (34%) who experienced contact sexual abuse by an adult did not tell anyone else about it. These statistics tell you how many, and also the area of ages and how many did not tell anyone about it, these caught my eye as it is cold hard facts.

Four out of five children who have experienced sexual abuse from a peer also did not tell anyone about it (82.7%). In March 2013, there were 2,701 children in the UK alone that were on the child protection registers, 5% of these children were in the category that included sexual abuse (31st March and July 2013 in Scotland). I found these statistics on the following website: http://www.nspcc.org.uk/Inform/resourcesforprofessionals/sexualabuse/statistics_wda87833.html
This was published by: Radford, Lorraine, Corral, Susana, Bradley, Christine, Fisher, Helen, Basset, Claire, Howat, Nick and Collishaw, Stephan (2011) Child abuse and neglect in the UK today. London: NSPCC.

Also, using a basic word search for information and further legal constraints involving what can and cannot be published involving children, I highlighted and annotated everything from this page: The commentaries of Visual Plethysmograph Stimuli Involving Children: Rethinking some Quasi-Logical Issue Sexual Abuse: A Journal of Research and Treatment
01-12-1996 Volume 8, Issue 4, pp 267-271 Authors: Robert D. Card  Susan E. Olsen. Publishers: Kluwer Academic Publishers-Plenum.)It was accessed through http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2FBF02260162#page-1
I then highlighted and annotated a segment of the journal, showing what everything is etc. I also made a key so people know what is highlighted for what, I will show this in my short film as it is relevant to the journal, it states ethical and legal constraints involving children.

For the viewing audience, factual information also needs to be presented so that they understand the full extent of what they're are being told so it can be completely understood. According to the ASA, laws have said i have to be extremely careful when recording my short film. As i am going to very careful, other marketers should keep in mind and take into consideration the feelings of others that allusions to sexual assault whether on men or women, should be treated with caution. It is a delicate subject and needs to be handled with care. For example a marketer that used its product name, Shark, as a play on the colloquial term “sharking”, which means looking for a sexual partner, had complaints about posters that were showing people with either bruises, scratches or bites. So what he had shown was not looked upon as acceptable.
On https://www.victimsupport.org.uk/what-we-do/information-leaflets near to the bottom there are leaflets of how to cope after rape/sexual assault for men and women.
For men:
For women:
Women are no more likely to suffer mental health illnesses than men there are around 69,000 female and 9,000 male rape victims per year, yet people often ask about the psychological well-being of rape victims when assessing their credibility. They don’t do this with robbery victims. Why not?

Budgeting

When searching the internet to find out the estimated price of standard budgeting I conducted the word search for 'film budgeting' and went on the bbc website to find out this information.

So when I am budgeting this short film i have had to take into consideration how many things that i will need, some essential and some that may or may not end up being used but are nice to have just incase they are needed. Some of the things i will have for producing my short film are the following:

The budgeting and needed equipment was read with concentration and then explained in my own words and bullet points.

  • Cast and Crew - You may not have to end up hiring anyone, but deciding early on will make the whole process a lot easier but, if you're not paying them when/if you hire them, it is customary to offer to cover their expenses.
  • Travel - Which will always be an unavoidable cost.
  • Catering - Everyone needs food and drinks, if the food is of a decent standard, more work and higher quality work will be produced.
  • Location - The location you film in is a very important part of the whole project as the better the location is suited, less props and editing will have to be done involving the location.
  • Camera, lighting and the accessories - Besides just having the camera itself you may need a various number of different lenses, a tripod, a zoom and a head but, with film you may need a video assist which allows you to see what you have just shot as film needs to be processed before it can be watched. Digital equipment is far more widely available than traditional 16mm and 35mm film cameras and there are a large number of local organisations that own cameras that can be hired, sometimes even borrowed by members of the public. Find out information about your local filmmaking community and you may be amazed by what is available for a very low cost and sometimes even for free. An ideal microphone for short film making is a good shotgun mike, but if you are on a low budget it may not be ideal as they can be pricey, but it's a good idea to have more than just the microphone on the camera.
  • Lighting - This is an incredibly important part of the filmmaking process, and one that you will need to invest some time in to make sure that the shoot is not wasted
  • Sound - The most important thing that you have to remember is that the dialogue must be recorded well, as asking actors to come back in to re-record their dialogue can be annoying and is going to cost more money.

Short film information

Short films can be shown on TV during the adverts and also online, adverts are always popping up whilst you are looking around online and the TV always shows adverts during the break of a program (excluding bbd and I have myself seen an advert of TV showing a man being violent to his girlfriend after she refuses sex and it really does give you an insight on how a small thing can be the sign of something bigger starting. For budgeting purposes, I have decided to make mine freely available on the internet as producing a lot of DVD's could become very expensive, also if it is made available on the internet it can be viewed by even more people and spread worldwide, therefore even more people can become aware of each issue involving sexual abuse and rape.

I received a hand out from my teacher which i highlighted and annotated with my own personal knowledge and information. This article was published on the 25 Apr 2013 by Louise Gibbins. It is available at http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/social-care-and-health/adult-social-care/protecting-adults-from-harm/domestic-abuse/domestic-abuse-information-for-professionals/domestic-abuse-news-and-publicity-material/raising-awareness-about-domestic-abuse-dvd

Sexual abuse in relationships and with strangers are both still huge problems not only in the UK but all over the world, not enough information is broadcasted to protect people from it, all of these tips are going to be shown in my film as they could help someone, there is a lot of information for how to deal with it but not how to prevent it in the first place, a few of these tips for prevention could be:
  • Do not walk alone at night, walk with at least one other person but the more people you are walking with the better.
  • Do not always take shortcuts, the other route may take you longer to get home but most longer routes are always lit and roads tend to be surrounded by houses.
  • Keep a phone on you at all times, if you feel you are being followed call someone or go and knock on a house closest to where you are and just tell them you are being followed.
  • More information to be taught in school for males and females on prevention and what to do in the situation/what to do after something like this happens
  • More information provided worldwide that is freely available no matter where you are in the world.

Further information

Rape and sexual abuse whether it be in a relationship or a complete stranger will never be okay, this subject will be thoroughly mentioned and highlighted in my short film. From a young age (mid-late teens) males and females should learn how to control themselves and never should feel the need to perform such an act without the consent of one of the people. My short film focus is to mainly provide information and where to seek help from if it is needed, if you feel that you are not able to control yourself, counselling can be a huge helping hand with problems.

It has been recorded that rape and sexual abuse more often happens to women but people do not always realize it can happen to both sexes. Out in the world there is more information for women than there is men and this is in no way fair and needs to be stopped. If a case of sexual abuse or rape is taken to court, females will be asked what they were wearing on the night of the incident and if the outfit is seen as provocative the case will almost certainly be thrown out which then leads to as what some people would call an unfair ruling. The person who committed this offence does not always have the chance to get away with what they have done, just recently a 50 year old man received a 10 year sentence for having videos and images of children being sexually abused. I skim read this article as I just wanted to find out the main information for my short film, the involvement of this can be to show that sometimes someone who commits this sort of crime will be prosecuted and the victim of this crime should not give up on trying to get the person who committed the offence what they deserve. It was published at 6:04pm on October 8th 2014, then later updated the same day at 7:59pm.

I found this report by completing a word search in google on the news tab, with the text 'sexual abuse videos'. This news report is relevant to my short film because I am doing my short film in a documentary style, so a real story that is print screened for people to be able to see is more eye opening than just words being said, with this story written here in black and white it shows that some people do get the justice they deserve.

Online using a word search I found an e-newspaper article from the guardian, it was published earlier this year and Ally Fogg is talking about the secrecy of sexual abuse, there are also statements from victims about how they feel after this has happened, the first person has said they no longer feel like a person, these were posted on reddit from survivors, he also explains that by talking about it, its likely that he will get accused of all sorts, but he seems to have the opinion that it needs to be talked about.

I saw the title and this is the sort of article I wanted to find, so once I saw the title I scanned the article for key words, these were men, women (just so I could really see if it involved both men and women, to see if it really spoke about the secrecy involving a sexual abuse situation.) You do not see many articles of this type and as i did find it, i thought it would be a use for my short story as it is not all about women, also men.

Overall, for my short film my main aim is to spread the word about all the information i have presented, i want to make people more aware of statistics, how to try and prevent anything like this happening when you are out and also, leaflets on how to receive help.
